Nostalgia. A Poem

What is NYSC? The call. The trip. Registration. Swearing in. Waking up. Sleeping during meditation. Dodging parade drills. Hanging out at mami market. Hanging from the upper bunk. Torn boots. Dirty tennis shoes. Brown shirt necklines. Funny shorts. Runny stockings. Attention! Ajuwaya!! Undersized head-dresses. Oversized khakis. White, white, white-everywhere! Camera flashes, teeth flashes. Under the sun or in the rain. Making up. Breaking up. Pulling out. Bonding with. The Beagle sings Good morning Nigeria! Good night Nigeria! The trek. The campfire. Victory. Defeat. Making choices by: losing yourself, then finding yourself. NYSC…. Nostalgia. Written in Camp Ede, Osun, Nigeria. 23.03.11. … Continue reading Nostalgia. A Poem

Gimme my change! – a short “lagos bus” tale

It’s a weekday and I’m half way home from work.  I cross the express and approach the “Second Rainbow” bus stop.  I quickly board a mini bus and a little girl hops in just as quickly after me.  She sits quiet, minding her business. I am (as usual) engrossed in my phone and don’t pay her much attention. We get to a major bus stop.  Two people alight the bus.  She asks me: “Where is this place?”  I respond: “Ajboju”.  She rushes to alight the bus as myself and other passengers hail the bus driver to slow down to let … Continue reading Gimme my change! – a short “lagos bus” tale

Life, death & things worth living for: Ebola is just next door

By now the whole world must have heard (or not) of the deadly ebola virus and its rapid spread across some African countries.  Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian diplomat who (intentionally?) brought the disease into Nigeria will be a name never to be forgotten by Nigerians in a very long time.  The fact that the hospital where he was admitted in and died, as well as another hospital where a patient was tested positive are a few kilometers away from my office is not at all comforting!  What about the bus trips to and from work?  You know how Lagos buses … Continue reading Life, death & things worth living for: Ebola is just next door

Lagos State Traffic: A Way Out

Lagos state occupies the smallest landmass and yet holds the largest population in Nigeria.  This is because to many, it is the city of dreams offering endless opportunities for all who dare to live within its borders.  Despite the population explosion resulting in housing deficit, scarce resources such as electricity and water, the flood menace, waste management challenges high crime and the heavy traffic, people still continue to troop westward in the hope of securing their own piece of the sky. It is no longer news, the traffic conditions that exist here.  For many of the inhabitants it is a … Continue reading Lagos State Traffic: A Way Out

These are a few of of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes/Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes/Brown paper packages tied up with strings/These are a few of my favourite things…. – A Few of my favourite things, Sound of Music. I’m quite upset at the moment.  In fact I have been upset since Monday last week. Except for the weekend which was gloriously peaceful, I’ve had a very rough 6 days, no thanks to the heavy construction and traffic taking place around my axis and made worse by the daily rainfall.  Over the years I have repressed my feelings concerning Lagos traffic because like … Continue reading These are a few of of my favorite things

Am I too Self Absorbed?

How do you explain not being able to write because you feel your posts are not good enough, or do not exactly explain how you exactly feel? For weeks now I have starred at my screen almost everyday, willing myself to write. I have lots of posts of unfinished stories, experiences and poems. I would start and then either get stuck or just not like the post at all. Nothing seemed post worthy. At some point in time guilt set in – getting weekly notifications from good ol’ WordPress, trying to encourage and inspire me to write, and not being able to meet up … Continue reading Am I too Self Absorbed?

Happy Holidays!

Hayoo Everyone! How’ve you been?  Missed me? I missed you more!  As always, there’s a lot of drama that’s been going on and I’m so sorry I’ve not been here to tell you all about it.  When I got back from my vacation I realized that some changes were made to my office space.  Yeah it looked really cool but I think my mind had a hard time accepting the new space.  I spent quite a while staring into space and not being very productive, haha.  I also didn’t have access to a computer for a while, and when I … Continue reading Happy Holidays!
